darkness, strange sounds are everywhere, we put on the costumes
andmakeup andbring thehouse alive. It is like a livingplay and the
customer is a part of the action, and all the events are happening
to them in real time”.
Bob Hoeppner began as an actor but after time became a
member of the SplatterHaus’s “Emergency Response Team.”
Wearingblack fatigues andworking invisibly in thebackground, he
andhis teamprotect not only the actors but also all of thepatrons
who come to visit the house each year. Patrons are never out
of sight and at amoment’snoticeBobcanprovideeverything from
security, medical assistance, maintenance on the house to letting
people out who are simply too scared to continue. While he loves
his job, he notes there is a dark side too, as they are always on the
lookout for people who have had toomuch to drink or are under
the influence of drugs and may be a danger to themselves or
others andneed tobe dealt with.
If there is a common theme among those who work in these
Haunted Houses it is a sense of family and kinship shared with
their fellowworkers. Just aswith any job, there iswork tobedone,
but the sense of pride and camaraderie that goes into each year’s
house brings people back year after year. Formany involved, it is
their favoriteholiday, and the thrill of givingother people scares is
an unparalleled experience. Each year actors try to top themselves
and find new angles and techniques to raise their proverbial game
andout dowhat they had in the past.
There is always a hope in those who work in these haunts that
friends and co-workers visit to see what exactly it is this different
breed of people do on their weekends, because it can be almost
impossible to describewithout experiencing it.
But if youdo visit one of these “HauntedHouses,” or youhear
something go bump in the night, be afraid…be very afraid. After
all, itmay be someone you know…
